We love videos like this. With this video even beginners can pick up a new trick or two to go have some fun without it being too difficult or frustrating or dangerous. Nailing a new trick in an hour or two is the best feeling. Sometimes, it’s a trick you’ll continue to do for the rest of your life and get a lot of props for! But, not every trick has to have air-time and rails whether it’s skateboarding OR longboarding or otherwise! The original roots of skateboard tricks were flatland and surf style tricks more like what we consider longboard freestyle and today, not what most people consider “tricks” on a skateboard, but these tricks paved the way for steez and style to be forefront in what soon blossomed from a surfer hobby sport to a world-wide phenomenon capturing the hearts and minds of the youth like something nobody had expected before, with pioneers like Jay Adams and the Dogtown Z Boys are still famous to this day for. Along these lines, Michael Brooke of Concrete Wave Magazine demonstrates as he shows off 10 of his favorite tricks in a video he calls:
There’s lots of ollies that could have been in the Top 5, but that’s not this. This is a pretty funny and yet very informative ollie tutorial here for skaters of all levels. Our hats are off to Skateboard Bruh for making this fine tutorial happen.
If you’re a beginner, check out the difference between the beginner ollie and the boned ollie and it might help you take it one step at a time. If you’re advanced, check out THE POSER OLLIE, this is one of the funniest explanations I’ve ever seen in a tutorial! I didn’t know what is up with this guys accent or where he’s from but if you subscribe to his channel you’ll probably figure it out! He’s got a lot of good tutorials, and it’s cool how he shoots this from a first-person point of view so you can see how it’s supposed to look when you look down at your feet to hit your ollie in practice!
Kickflip your deck into shape with your own personal custom grip tape. Add personalized features to your board like unique logos or handcrafted designs sketched by you. Whateverskateboards.com offers an array of design options allowing personal artistry to come to life. No skateboard will ever be the same with the option to design your own grip tape, trucks and wheels! You can be as simple or complex as you want. Awaken the pro skater in you with a killer custom skateboard for your easy riding.
Unleash Your Creative Mind
Jab into your originality as a skater and find what drives you to skate. With your passion, designing your own grip tape can become a way to get you back into your roots with skateboarding. Nicknames, logos, graffiti art, personal sketches, brand names, pictures are just simple starters to think about with your custom grip tape. Now you can think of designing both sides of your skateboard and what contrasting colors look best together. The top of the skateboard is something people see first which is a great way to sponsor names or extend your brand to the pros.
Style Your Ride
Getting your name out to the public can be challenging but with custom grip tape you can design fresh logos that attract riders from all around! When you design your skateboard or long board custom designs always look amazing because no one else has seen them before. This way when you’re cruising down hills, riding the pipes, or doing tricks on a rail both sides of your skateboard are visible. Attracting others attention just got twice as easier than before so styling your ride would give your status as a rider ample leeway in the direction of your skating career.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 is Almost Here! Break Out Your Control Sticks, The Skateboard Video Game King Is Back!
Its really happening and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 is back and set to release in just a few short days on September 29th. We’ve already got our THPS5 pre-orders placed, our XBox One controllers buffed, and our thumbs ready for action. We play a lot of skating video games at the Whatever Skateboards office, from the Skate series to setting Top 10 Global Records on Ollie Ollie, but Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 is going to be the ultimate. You may have forgotten but let us remind you: we’re a San Diego skateboard company and that means we rock everything Hawk. We’ve been drooling over the gameplay footage, soundtrack, and hype for weeks. Now that Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 is ready for release (remember, its been almost 13 years since THPS4 was released) we can barely contain ourselves.
Make Me Drool THPS5
Easy. First off its the most major release since in the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series since you started skating. Remember stick jamming on THPS the Playstation 1 / N64 versions? Us too. Remember the incredible soundtracks? Yep. Remember the ridiculous air and tricks? YEP. Its all back, and its better than ever. Online play, create a park, real world locations, and everything you ever wanted. And oh yeah, they added in the slam down grind feature from Ollie Ollie that really lets you jam around and pop on and off.
I Can Haz Customization? Can I Create My Own Skater and Skateboard?
It is confirmed in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 you can create your own skateboard deck and even do customization on your skater. This is huge for the series and was a major draw for Skate 3 and Skate 4. Word on the street is in THPS5 you’ll be able to use some major brand graphics and art so we’re stoked to see what THPS brings. As the gold standard for skateboard customization we’re glad to see Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 get in on the action we’re excited to see if there’s a way to print your Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 custom skateboard design in real life.
Oh Wait What Online Mode!?
Yes this time around you can build and share your own parks. Other skaters will be skating next to you as you’re hitting tricks & lines for objectives so you can watch other people and share your best lines live. No word yet on if you need to share the ramp but we’ll keep posted on how easy it is to snake. It looks pretty cool to be shredding a park with your friends online, especially if they aren’t skaters or live across the country. No substitute for a good skate sesh but after you push home this game is going to be awesome to crash on the couch with.

SK8 KAMP 2015 Kickstarter is Live! Go go backers gooooooooooo! SK8 KAMP is a skater’s dream and without a doubt one of the best skateboarding Kickstarters of the year. Each year at Burning Man a crew of crazed skaters takes a working skatepark they built out to the desert for some seriously dustblasted sessions. The effort is enormous and the results are always impressive, even if you aren’t seeking your skating spirit animal out at the burn. Check the SK8 KAMP 2014 Montage highlight reel to see footie from last year’s skatepark along with some of the black & blue ribbon winners from the infamous SK8 KAMP bruise count.
Now You Have SK8 KAMP FOMO, There Is Only 1 Cure
Now that you’ve seen SK8 KAMP (and backed? you backed it right? GO BACK IT AND COME BACK) you have have a serious problem: you need everything about the SK8 KAMP 2015 Skatepark in your life. But since you already backed it you know there is a cure for your hardcore FOMO and that is the ridiculous prize for the $100 package that only SK8 KAMP can do. For the small price of those one hundred dollars the SK8 KAMP 2015 Team is letting people fulfill their ultimate fantasy of living within a skatepark by letting people squat overnight under their work. SLEEP IS FOR THE WEAK.
How Do I Know Its Real and Not Just Existing In An Existential Burning Man Dreamscape?
We know it seems like a group hallucination but you’re not crazy and its definitely real. The meticulous injury count over the past 5 years as SK8 KAMP has grown is a testament the reality of bailing in the desert. And we quote:
“Here’s an injury count from our previous years (don’t worry, we take good care of our injured Sk8ers with our Kamp wheel chair and ice packs):
2011 – 1 throat hit/injured by skateboard, 1 lip split open, 3 sprained ankles, 232 bruises
2012 – 1 broken arm, 1 injured shoulder, 1 broken leg, 543 bruises
2013 – 1 broken arm, 3 twisted ankles, 367 bruises
2014 – 1 broken arm, 1 sprained ankle, 1 sliced lip, 162 bruises (we’re way down, what is happening here?)”
Unicorns are real.
With such a huge decrease in bruises the SK8 KAMP team is funneling their extra ice pack money in to making sure things are extra crazy this year. They’re power packing along with DUSTFISH and Sextant camps to Voltron up and create DUSTFISH Village. Location is 6:30 & Esplanade near Center Camp and in the primetime zone. With such an epic camp comes a need for funds and SK8 KAMP is only asking for a small amount to make it happen. Every year they go to huge lengths to create the unicorn of skate parks and this year will be the biggest unicorn yet.
We’ve been waiting a little while to give an update/review on this meganews because we wanted to see what’s what with the new RIDE Channel website. Obviously RIDE Channel, the Tony Hawk + YouTube megaventure and hothouse for skating vids, is one of the best YouTube channels period. If you’re watching skateboarding videos on the same Internet we’re on then you’ve been watching RIDE Channel. Example: the Tony Hawk “Perched” video. But RIDE broke out a new .com site recently and we weren’t quite sure what to expect or even what that would change. Turns out this opens up a whole new side to the RIDE.
Remember That Time Tony Hawk & Rodney Mullen Talked About Inventing Kickflips?
That was a RIDE Channel video.
Double RIDE Rainbow? What Does It Even Mean?
Tbh we weren’t sure at first either; it was mostly just the same vids from their YouTube channel. So we let it play out a little during their soft launch in late October. But now we’re in deep and in the past few weeks we’ve gotten a taste of what’s to come out of the new RIDE Channel website. The main thing that’s new: articles. Before RIDE was pretty much nothing but videos now we’re getting a heaping onslaught of senior skateboarding journalism.
Words Are Hard
No kidding, we just wrote this entire review. So thankfully RIDE is now letting loose some of their writers to take the reigns. So far the new skate news over there has run the entire spectrum from kicking up some dust to get riders sponsored to insightful commentary on the skateboarding industry to top 10 lists and re-posts of the vids you know from their YouTube channel. The best of the new stuff (no surprise here) is coming from from the old school skate writer vets. You’ll recognize some of the authors from the sneakerbeast that is Complex and you’re not going crazy: it’s because Tony Hawk partnered with Complex to launch this new side to RIDE. Special shoutout to the new stuff by Lucas Wisenthal who’s written work really shines on the new site.
Videos Are Still The Best Part of RIDE
The new articles are good but RIDE’s bread and butter is still the skating vids.
My Brain Hurts Tell Me What To Think About This Plz
TL;DR – the reviews are in and the RIDE Channel and Tony Hawk have done it again. The website is worth a visit to snag some of the written articles. Missed the link? Click here!

Check Out Vids From the 2013 Skateboard Marathon!
Wha-Wha-Whaaaaaat!? A Skateboard Marathon!?
That’s right, 26.2 miles of nothing but pushing wood. Notice most people are riding longboards, that’s a key difference when going for this kind of endurance skate. We’ve seen guys training around town for the past few weeks cruising by on cutouts and dropthroughs with giant wheels. How big? We stopped one guy training for the event on the street cruising on some 97mm! CRAZY. Expect to see some of the best in longboarding and some classic longboard and downhill skateboards at this event.
The Course: Fiesta Island
Fiesta Island is a go-to destination for massive outdoor sporting events in San Diego; its home to multiple races and world championships including the Over The Line world championship. The course is a nicely paved loop circling around island with awesome water views and some gorgeous scenery. Hey, its San Diego, did you expect anything less? Here’s the official map of the course, (the loop is ~4.3 miles):
Tony Hawk Hands Out Full Size Tricks For Halloween With Perched
We’re a San Diego company so we’re shameless Tony Hawk fans, (remember our Tony Hawk Circuit Boards article?), but this time our local legend brought even sweeter treats with his latest tricks in his new skate vid Perched that dropped with RIDE Channel. Perched is basically an all out one man vert holiday reel where Tony Hawk reminds you that he’s still the king.
Not Enough Treats? DJ ZTrip Remixed Tony Hawk Pro Skater Songs For This Vid
YEP. HAPPENED. In case you want to rock these jamz yourself and can’t find your PS1…
This little skater may be our cutest fan to date! As huge dog lovers (you’ve probably seen our office dog Marley on Twitter), we can’t resist sharing dogs skateboarding. We do love all furry friends trying to get their shred on but so far in the great dogs vs. cats debate dogs are dominating the skating category.
