As skateboarding has gained more and more popularity over the years, the design of decks has gotten increasingly more creative. There are plenty of ways to be creative when it comes to your skateboard deck, and we make it easy with our online customizer. Since you are able to fully customize your skateboard on our website, the possibilities really are endless. One rad way to customize that we have been digging lately is putting photos on your board. You can place a single photo, multiple photos, or create a collage of photos to put on a deck. Not sure what type of photo to use? We share some of our favorite ideas and ways to have photos on a skateboard.
Personal Photos on a Skateboard
Photo-adorned skateboard make great gifts as well. Order a board with photos of the birthday boy and he will be stoked on his birthday present. Friends tying the knot? Have a few of their favorite photos as a couple transformed into a keepsake that they can either display or ride down the street. Skateboards with photos of you also make a great holiday gift for your parents. Even if they don’t ride, having something you made for them that you enjoy with your favorite photos is sure to please.
Photos as Keepsakes
If you don’t want to use photos of yourself or others, consider the endless other possibilities. If you are a photographer, placing on of your original photos on a skateboard is the perfect way to attract attention to your work while creating the perfect way to get around while you are taking photos. Or perhaps you have some old photos laying around that hold sentimental value. Putting them on a skateboard is a great way to preserve the memories in a fun and creative way.
Create Unique Designs on Your Custom Grip Tape
Kickflip your deck into shape with your own personal custom grip tape. Add personalized features to your board like unique logos or handcrafted designs sketched by you. Whateverskateboards.com offers an array of design options allowing personal artistry to come to life. No skateboard will ever be the same with the option to design your own grip tape, trucks and wheels! You can be as simple or complex as you want. Awaken the pro skater in you with a killer custom skateboard for your easy riding.
Unleash Your Creative Mind
Jab into your originality as a skater and find what drives you to skate. With your passion, designing your own grip tape can become a way to get you back into your roots with skateboarding. Nicknames, logos, graffiti art, personal sketches, brand names, pictures are just simple starters to think about with your custom grip tape. Now you can think of designing both sides of your skateboard and what contrasting colors look best together. The top of the skateboard is something people see first which is a great way to sponsor names or extend your brand to the pros.
Style Your Ride
Getting your name out to the public can be challenging but with custom grip tape you can design fresh logos that attract riders from all around! When you design your skateboard or long board custom designs always look amazing because no one else has seen them before. This way when you’re cruising down hills, riding the pipes, or doing tricks on a rail both sides of your skateboard are visible. Attracting others attention just got twice as easier than before so styling your ride would give your status as a rider ample leeway in the direction of your skating career.

Everyone knows the 2016 X Games is going to be one of the largest 2016 skateboarding competitions. With a focus on multiple forms of multiple sports the X Games are an amazing place to catch both street skateboarding and vert skating. As far as star power expect the 2016 X Games to have a huge presence, megawatt name skaters will be crawling all over the place given the venue and the huge global coverage from ESPN and ABC. Austin is an awesome and skater-friendly city and the major air events are sure to be a spectacle.
Dew Tour 2016
Dew Tour 2016 Location: TBA
Dew Tour 2016 Dates: TBA
It wouldn’t be right to go without mentioning the Dew Tour. Like the X Games on wheels the 2016 Dew Tour will likely be packed to the brim with star power. Dew Tour is often an easier set of skateboard events to attend as, you guessed it, they roam on tour. They haven’t announced their 2016 tour locations yet but if the past is any indication they’ll have about three stops throughout the year with at least one tour date in Los Angeles. As far as 2016 skateboard events go the Dew Tour is definitely one of the bigger events though its not strictly a skateboarding competition.
SLS 2016 Location: TBA
SLS 2016 Dates: TBA
The 2016 Street League Skating Season is going to have some of the most important skateboarding events of 2016. Of course everyone is going to be tuned in to the Super Crown at the end of the season towards September/October, but before that we’ll all be watching the new minted Ams turned Pro through the SPoT / Dam Am / SLS farm system . Look for the usual arrangement of superstars and global locations. SLS 2016 season will likely continue to be the premiere skateboarding competitions in 2016 with major TV coverage and an international presence. If you’re in another country or aren’t near some of the larger events the SLS Season is an easier tour to get on location for a pro skateboarding event in 2016. No tickets to SLS 2016? No big deal. Even without tickets to any SLS event you can still catch the entire 2016 season streaming online.

The SPoT Dam Am event that leads to a Pro spot and a chance to get the SLS Golden Ticket is actually in 2015 in November so look for some fresh faces. If you want a 2016 skateboarding competition this is your jamz. Be sure to catch the exclusive live stream on the SLS website if its not one of the 2016 skateboard competitions you’ll have tickets for. Skate Park of Tampa Pro 2016

There’s only one major endurance skateboarding event and its the Adrenalina Skateboard Marathon held yearly in San Diego. A grueling 26.2 miles of non-stop woodpushing this is not a skateboarding event for the faint of heart (literally). The world record is set around the 1hr 30min mark, for a normal skater expect to be pushing for 3 to 4 hours. Longboards and big wheels are a must for this event though there are standard park & street decks making the rounds. Like most skateboarding competitions this one has a party at a local brew pub after then event. If you’re looking for a destination skateboarding event in 2016 San Diego is a beautiful city. Plus the skateboard marathon is for all ages making it about the only 2016 pro skateboard event everyone can enter. Click here to check out the Skateboard Marathon.

When it comes to 2016 skateboarding events, this is one that everyone MUST do. 2016 Go Skateboarding Day!
International Olympic Committee Vote – Skateboarding in the 2020 Olympics
Not really a skateboarding event in the classic sense its important to remember that 2016 is a landmark year for skateboarding. During the August 2016 meeting of the IOC they’ll vote to decide if skateboarding makes the 2020 Olympics as a official sport! You can probably catch the vote online the day after, no real need to watch it live.
Whatever Skateboard’s Official Review – Tony Flop Pro Skater 5
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 is out and the results are in: its not good. You know its for real when die hard Tony Hawk fans like ourselves are bearing the bad news. The Tony Hawk hype machine had pumped this skating game up to 11 only to have it aggressively panned on social media and by critics. A quick read of comments on Tony Hawk’s Instagram lets you know how people feel. Sadly Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 doesn’t even let you design your own skateboard. And unfortunately for skaters this is the most recently released major skateboard game so there’s no real option but to buy it and complain :-( And that brings us to our Official Whatever Skateboards Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 Review.
SCORE: 7.2 / 10 (NO BUENO)
What Does Whatever Skateboards Know About Skateboard Games?
For one we play the XBox One in our office constantly and we’ve logged some major hours designing our own skateboard in Skate 3 and Skate 4. While we don’t have an Official Whatever Skateboards Review of Olli Olli and Olli Olli 2 we’ve logged A LOT of hours on them and even have some of the global high scores. Not to mention several members of our team used to be game developers and had platinum hits so we’re not just parroting the rest of the reviews.
The Good: This Game Has Some Moments
As with any game you can see the developers and production team did try put their hearts in to it. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 shines during certain surprise and delight moments: putting the first weird head on your skater, popping beach balls in The Berrics pool, and even firing explosive rockets out of your skateboard. The subtle trick names as you clear gaps and grind rails are good for a smile and the quippy mission names are the same way. Some of the missions are better than others, and there are a few times the rides lines really are spectacular. Overall the stock levels are actually pretty fun and larger than we expected. Oddly enough one of the best parts of this game is the stupid Robomoto intro.
The Bad: Yikes
Our first office play session was hours long and we unlocked the third level. The next day we went to play again and all of our game data had been reset. That meant hours of replaying the missions and the complete lack of story (unlike THPS Underground) became painful. We bailed. We forced ourselves to pick it back up again. Every private match ended in a crashed game and needing an XBox One reboot. You can’t even switch Missions from within a Mission, you have to go all the way out to “Freeskate” mode even though the menu opens up. You hit the left menu button and the menu opens on the right of the screen. Hit the right menu button and the menu opens on the left side of the screen. In a nutshell this game is mentally painful to play.
The Ugly: This Game Is Actually Worse Than You Realize
This game does a bit of a disservice to gaming. Where the original Tony Hawk Pro Skater was innovative and moved gaming forward this game was a cold rehash of the Tony Hawk franchise. The best new move was stolen from Olli Olli and the “big new thing” is a multiplayer open world no one wants to be in. Given the years between the release of THPS4 and THPS5 this game should have been a glorious reboot of one of the last god-tier gaming franchises from the golden era of 32 and 64 bit gaming. Instead we got the Star Wars: Episode 1 of skateboard games. Everyone was hoping for a new version of an old classic but instead what we got was the same old game. There goes another unicorn :’-(
The soundtrack is another great place to see something terribly wrong with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5: its all rock and punk. There’s no EDM, no dubstep, no hip hop, and no rap. The original soundtrack was incredible, this was huge chance to reboot it and instead what we got was a small can of TH approved music. We know he likes that stuff already, its not new to brand followers. And its certainly not in touch with modern music. Does the Hawk listen to anything but guitars? What about any other skaters in the game? Do they have ears and like music? We’ll never know.
Unlike the original Tony Hawk Pro Skater which had a bevy of famous skaters this version pretty much lets you pick from Tony Hawk, Tony Hawk Jr., and Tony Hawkette. Where the hell is Rodney Mullen, Evan Smith, Kilian Martin, or any female skaters? Why can’t I make my own face on a skater? Why can’t I skate my own skate? The original Tony Hawk Pro Skater went so far past Tony Hawk himself that it made him stand out as a remarkable individual in a community and finalized his status as a pop culture god. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 continues to celebrate the Tony Hawk legacy but never gets past the Tony Hawk brand enough to connect with anyone actually playing the game.
In the end it felt like THPS5 was a game made for one person to play: Tony Hawk.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 PROTIPS
- Metacritic gave this a 1.5 / 5
- Gamespot gave this a 3.0 / 10
- Wait until much later or even after the holidays to get this game if you have to buy it the price will be much lower.
SK8 KAMP Burning Man Kickstarter 2015 is live! Support a Skate Park on The Playa in Black Rock City!
SK8 KAMP 2015 Kickstarter is Live! Go go backers gooooooooooo! SK8 KAMP is a skater’s dream and without a doubt one of the best skateboarding Kickstarters of the year. Each year at Burning Man a crew of crazed skaters takes a working skatepark they built out to the desert for some seriously dustblasted sessions. The effort is enormous and the results are always impressive, even if you aren’t seeking your skating spirit animal out at the burn. Check the SK8 KAMP 2014 Montage highlight reel to see footie from last year’s skatepark along with some of the black & blue ribbon winners from the infamous SK8 KAMP bruise count.
Now You Have SK8 KAMP FOMO, There Is Only 1 Cure
Now that you’ve seen SK8 KAMP (and backed? you backed it right? GO BACK IT AND COME BACK) you have have a serious problem: you need everything about the SK8 KAMP 2015 Skatepark in your life. But since you already backed it you know there is a cure for your hardcore FOMO and that is the ridiculous prize for the $100 package that only SK8 KAMP can do. For the small price of those one hundred dollars the SK8 KAMP 2015 Team is letting people fulfill their ultimate fantasy of living within a skatepark by letting people squat overnight under their work. SLEEP IS FOR THE WEAK.
How Do I Know Its Real and Not Just Existing In An Existential Burning Man Dreamscape?
We know it seems like a group hallucination but you’re not crazy and its definitely real. The meticulous injury count over the past 5 years as SK8 KAMP has grown is a testament the reality of bailing in the desert. And we quote:
“Here’s an injury count from our previous years (don’t worry, we take good care of our injured Sk8ers with our Kamp wheel chair and ice packs):
2011 – 1 throat hit/injured by skateboard, 1 lip split open, 3 sprained ankles, 232 bruises
2012 – 1 broken arm, 1 injured shoulder, 1 broken leg, 543 bruises
2013 – 1 broken arm, 3 twisted ankles, 367 bruises
2014 – 1 broken arm, 1 sprained ankle, 1 sliced lip, 162 bruises (we’re way down, what is happening here?)”
Unicorns are real.
With such a huge decrease in bruises the SK8 KAMP team is funneling their extra ice pack money in to making sure things are extra crazy this year. They’re power packing along with DUSTFISH and Sextant camps to Voltron up and create DUSTFISH Village. Location is 6:30 & Esplanade near Center Camp and in the primetime zone. With such an epic camp comes a need for funds and SK8 KAMP is only asking for a small amount to make it happen. Every year they go to huge lengths to create the unicorn of skate parks and this year will be the biggest unicorn yet.
It’s Also Charity Bro
See because once they’re done they donate the features and obstacles and ramps and hopes and dreams to local parks. So you also directly benefit the community. Be like SK8 KAMP. Be a hero. Do the right thing and back their 2015 Kickstarter.
