2016 year is shaping up to be one of the most important years ever in skateboarding history with more skateboard competitions and huge skating events than ever before. X Games 2016
X Games 2016 Location: Austin, TX
X Games 2016 Dates: June 2nd, 2016 – June 5th, 2016
Everyone knows the 2016 X Games is going to be one of the largest 2016 skateboarding competitions. With a focus on multiple forms of multiple sports the X Games are an amazing place to catch both street skateboarding and vert skating. As far as star power expect the 2016 X Games to have a huge presence, megawatt name skaters will be crawling all over the place given the venue and the huge global coverage from ESPN and ABC. Austin is an awesome and skater-friendly city and the major air events are sure to be a spectacle.
Dew Tour 2016
Dew Tour 2016 Location: TBA
Dew Tour 2016 Dates: TBA
It wouldn’t be right to go without mentioning the Dew Tour. Like the X Games on wheels the 2016 Dew Tour will likely be packed to the brim with star power. Dew Tour is often an easier set of skateboard events to attend as, you guessed it, they roam on tour. They haven’t announced their 2016 tour locations yet but if the past is any indication they’ll have about three stops throughout the year with at least one tour date in Los Angeles. As far as 2016 skateboard events go the Dew Tour is definitely one of the bigger events though its not strictly a skateboarding competition.
SLS 2016 Location: TBA
SLS 2016 Dates: TBA
The 2016 Street League Skating Season is going to have some of the most important skateboarding events of 2016. Of course everyone is going to be tuned in to the Super Crown at the end of the season towards September/October, but before that we’ll all be watching the new minted Ams turned Pro through the SPoT / Dam Am / SLS farm system . Look for the usual arrangement of superstars and global locations. SLS 2016 season will likely continue to be the premiere skateboarding competitions in 2016 with major TV coverage and an international presence. If you’re in another country or aren’t near some of the larger events the SLS Season is an easier tour to get on location for a pro skateboarding event in 2016. No tickets to SLS 2016? No big deal. Even without tickets to any SLS event you can still catch the entire 2016 season streaming online.
Skate Park of Tampa – 22nd Annual Tampa Pro
2016 Tampa Pro Location: Tampa, FL
2016 Tampa Pro Dates: March 4th, 2016 – March 6th, 2016
Speaking of SLS skateboarding events… the 22nd Annual Tampa Pro is THE skateboarding event. This is the event where pros can come up and make the official SLS pro roster. As far as 2016 skateboarding events goes this is the ONE. The SPoT Dam Am event that leads to a Pro spot and a chance to get the SLS Golden Ticket is actually in 2015 in November so look for some fresh faces. If you want a 2016 skateboarding competition this is your jamz. Be sure to catch the exclusive live stream on the SLS website if its not one of the 2016 skateboard competitions you’ll have tickets for. Skate Park of Tampa Pro 2016

A grueling 26.2 miles of non-stop woodpushing this is not a skateboarding event for the faint of heart (literally). The world record is set around the 1hr 30min mark, for a normal skater expect to be pushing for 3 to 4 hours. Longboards and big wheels are a must for this event though there are standard park & street decks making the rounds. Like most skateboarding competitions this one has a party at a local brew pub after then event. If you’re looking for a destination skateboarding event in 2016 San Diego is a beautiful city. Plus the skateboard marathon is for all ages making it about the only 2016 pro skateboard event everyone can enter. Click here to check out the Skateboard Marathon.

International Olympic Committee Vote – Skateboarding in the 2020 Olympics
Not really a skateboarding event in the classic sense its important to remember that 2016 is a landmark year for skateboarding. During the August 2016 meeting of the IOC they’ll vote to decide if skateboarding makes the 2020 Olympics as a official sport! You can probably catch the vote online the day after, no real need to watch it live.
We know what if feels like to want to design your own old school skateboard so we made the very best old school skateboard decks and old school longboards around. Here are some of our best deck shapes to custom design with a timeless appeal. At Whatever Skateboards we’re all about designing your own old school skateboard, from the pinnacle of the park popsicle to the laziest longboard cruiser. Like any silver screen masterpiece the test of time has even improved of the classics with modern science, (read: fiberglass). Old school skateboarding style without riding like something from history class (Editor: *groan*). We’ve taken the time to break down some of the best “design your own” old school skateboards and old school longboards we have on our site.
Design Your Own Old School Skateboard – Skateboarding 101
If there is one old school skateboard that took over to defined skateboarding and solidified itself as the official “skateboard” shape is it this iconic textbook shape. Nothing says old school quite like… well… a classic skateboard. One of the best formats to design your own this pro model also is made of top quality wood so you’ll be able to shred in steez. Gripped up with Jessup and ready to roll nothing says gourmet like a classic popsicle deck.
The Oversized Skateboard – Skateboarding 201
Some people insist bigger is better and in a nod to the early days we’ve gone ahead and carved this massive hunk of old school wood pushing madness. Shaped in an older style with modern cuts the actual size of the board is much bigger than the old school style street decks. Built for ancient beasts and those who need a little more canvas for their graphics this is one of the decks we’ve finally grown up enough to mash around.
The Dart – Your Friendly Old School Longboard
No trip down old school skateboard lane is complete without longboarding and no old school longboarding sesh is complete without a Dart pintail style. The original beach shape and preferred throughout Southern California for ages the surf style pintail give you that uplifting bouncy ride you remember. Pop up and down to some tunes on your Walkman and throwback to when when tails were out of fashion. Cooler than a skinny tie in a class picture this amazing old school beach style cruiser looks great with custom beach themed designs.
Official Whatever Skateboard Old Skool Skateboard
This is our official slice of old school skateboarding and this shape is sweeter than summer vacation with a deck shape shimmering somewhere between cruiser, shortboard, and fishtail. When you tell your grandkids on their hoverboards about skateboarding this is the shape you are talking about. We took inspiration from all of our favorites so you feel like you’re riding every style of old school skate at once. Fishing for that monster fin in back? You’ll catch it. Want to get groovy with the sweeps? Jack up on some risers or use the carved wheel wells to snap in some reverse kingpins and throw peace signs on the boardwalk. Need to pop? The tail catches. Monster hill? Use the extra length we threw in with a slightly wider pocket in back. This is a go to daily driver and a dependable skate. The wide shape is awesome for custom old school designs and graphics and is the definitive upgrade for all old school skates.
Ready to Design Your Old School Skateboard?
That’s the general feeling around the office now that we can deck-out all of our own skateboards and longboards with new custom griptape and design it all online. We’ve been working on getting this for a long time, and we’re proud to say it’s finally here and live on the site as we speak!
Why Custom Griptape is Awesome
Getting a new board is awesome, too! Don’t get me wrong, I’d take a new deck over new grip any day. Especially when it can come with custom griptape already installed on it (also an option now for the boards you’re designing on our website). But, new boards can be expensive to buy a lot of, and sometimes you want a custom deck look without spending as much cash as you would for a custom board. For a lot of us, brand new complete setups are once or twice a year kind of deal – plus however many decks we snap or break along the way, but that’s not too often. Because of money, it’s a shame, but it’s just tough to step up your skateboard or longboard collection very frequently – especially if you’re a kid, or you got no job, or you just broke like a lot of us skaters out here in the streets! We feel you! The main reason it’s awesome is because you get to rock your personal style on your deck and get creative or rep your crew, but it’s awesome that you can grip up any deck with your own sweet new custom grip tape design that will turn any deck of any age into a fresh new deck from the top! You don’t have to buy a full new deck just to deck it out with your own style. Just design some custom grip and you’re fresh as hell at half the cost (or less). If you’re the type of skater that snaps a lot of decks and picks up blanks for cheap, then this is the custom grip option for you!
But Is It Good Grip Tape?
Are you kidding? How about some of the BEST grip tape? This isn’t some home grown grip, we’ve got Jessup brand griptape ready for your custom grip artwork and we can say from experience that this grip tape is great. A lot of people these days are hot to trot on Grizzly Grip Tape, Mob Grip, Shake Junt, and a few others, and those are cool too! But, when we had to choose which brand to rep we went with Jessup because it’s the most OG of them all! I mean how OG are you when your website domain name is literally GripTape.com? You don’t snag a name like that unless you get it from the very beginning, and that’s what they did, as the true original grip tape company that was the first to bring silicon carbide griptape to the skateboard industry, starting all the way back in 1975. Right now for Custom we have fine/regular grip tape, not coarse yet (if you’re doing slides and hard downhill, you may want to wait for coarse) but otherwise we recommend the fine grip for most park, street, freestyle, commuter, casual, and definitely the only choice for cruisers. Unless you’re doing aggressive skating where you really need a ton of grip (which you can also get on our site, but not custom yet), then the finer grip tape will actually be more comfortable and won’t tear up your clothes or shoes as easily.
Design Your Custom Griptape
Whew! We’ve been away from the blog for a bit there but we’re back with some great updates! We’ve been in the lab making the site better every day, including getting our new board models for 2015 ready to launch.
New 2015 Custom Longboard Models!
Alas, the wait is over! We’re starting the new boards out right this year with some real killer custom decks, some mods and improvements on old deck shapes, and some brand new shapes! The new improvements are awesome, making the boards even more fun to ride in all the right ways. The new shapes are dope, and some that have been previously reserved for only team riders are now available for everyone – w00t!
The 2015 Dart (Cruiser / Pin Tail)
After our 2014 Dart sold out we knew this deck would be a popular one again in 2015, and we’ve modified the shape to be longer and wider. This makes the deck an obvious choice for cruising the boardwalk or doing some casual downhill. The added length makes it even more stable and fun to carve, and the more symmetrical shape makes it less top heavy and a better all around balance to the board. At 44 inches long you’ll have enough room to comfortably walk around on the board and rock different stances or toe hangs. The classic lengthy pin tail longboard shape is timeless and stylish, perfect for cruising to the beach. check it out »
The Bullet (Freeride / Downhill)
This was previously only a team board, and is now available for custom design for anyone and everyone. This deck has a real unique shape, wide and short with a flat medium concave in front and W concave in back, letting your back foot really get a solid grip for freeride thrashing. This deck looks like a bullet in shape with a blunt back end and pointed nose, and flies like a bullet, with only 8 ply making is a lighter hill bomber than the Bomber, or Perfecto. The beastly wide style adds a lot of control for balance and powering hard carves, but the relatively shorter 36 inch height keeps it light and agile, and also is great for riders with big feet. All in all this free ride beast surprises you with it’s downhill abilities making it an awesome all around mountain shredder.

The Bomber (Downhill / Freeride)
This is by far the most responsive downhill board we have. The Bomber was also an exclusive team rider board until this year, and we’re excited to have the custom print ability ready to rock for 2015 so now anyone can design their own custom Bomber longboard. This deck is topmount but has underflush truck spots and mircrodrops at each end to lower the center of gravity, and a deep concave (W in back). All combined that gets your feet locking in deep right on the trucks for amazing control and maximum leverage. The 9 ply hard maple construction is super stiff, for high speeds and tight turns. If you’re bombing hills and trying to get to the bottom as fast as possible with the control to shred the tight turns, this is a great choice.

Wha-Wha-Whaaaaaat!? A Skateboard Marathon!?
That’s right, 26.2 miles of nothing but pushing wood. Notice most people are riding longboards, that’s a key difference when going for this kind of endurance skate. We’ve seen guys training around town for the past few weeks cruising by on cutouts and dropthroughs with giant wheels. How big? We stopped one guy training for the event on the street cruising on some 97mm! CRAZY. Expect to see some of the best in longboarding and some classic longboard and downhill skateboards at this event.
The Course: Fiesta Island
Fiesta Island is a go-to destination for massive outdoor sporting events in San Diego; its home to multiple races and world championships including the Over The Line world championship. The course is a nicely paved loop circling around island with awesome water views and some gorgeous scenery. Hey, its San Diego, did you expect anything less? Here’s the official map of the course, (the loop is ~4.3 miles):
O2 (Telefónica Europe) has just released their latest full-length commercial and guess who’s featured? That’s right, our Whatever Skateboards riders Alessandra Koenig & Leticia Nobreza! This was filmed in Malibu, CA on one of the gnarliest downhill rides on the entire West Coast. Sorry boys; this shoot was for professionals only. Shot over the course of several days with a trained cameraman (props), on-site support staff including fellow Whatever rider Suigo Revilla, kickass Whatever Skateboards gear, and of course proper downhill safety equipment this was the real deal. You can only get this kind of downhill skate footage by doing it up right and the end result is incredible. You can catch Alessandra & Leticia shredding at @0:11 and @0:30 and then Ale showing the camera some skateboard modeling love @0:45.
Details & Behind the Scenes
The ad campaign hashtag is #YouCanDo but it is going to be tough to do it better than our two riders. If you’ve seen them in other commercials, skate vids, and ad campaigns you know Alessandra and Leticia are professional models and skaters. No stranger to a crazy SoCal shred these girls are *the* definition of girl power. They were backed by an amazing crew and thankfully the only injury was a nice raspberry on the last day, (someone won’t be sitting down for a while!) This particular run in Malibu is not for the faint of heart. Remember, if you’re going to be doing serious downhill runs like this be careful; these are professional riders on a closed course.
To celebrate our kickass riders and their latest projects we’re offering a 15% off until May 1 using the coupon code YOUCANDO. So get out there and design your own skateboard and support our riders!
Want to help our riders save the world? Alessandra is not just a Whatever rider and professional model she also runs her own non-profit! Help her charity Echo give children in Peru access to sanitary kits so they can have clean water and education about proper hygiene.

This vid comes to us from the Restless Boards team vids and even though they’re normally based out of Montreal, Canada these guys managed to find what must be one of the most gorgeous skates in all of Switzerland/Europe/the world. We have no idea what they’re saying in French but next time they hit Europe we’ll need to tag along. Look at that turn at @0:54 & the scenery @1:20. Credit where credit is due, all the skaters in this vid are Restless riders on their Euro tour: Niko Desmarais, Flavien Vidal, and Charles Ouimet. Our skate spots in SoCal are pretty good but these guys are basically skating the set of “The Sound of Music” in this vid.
WARNING: this is not for the faint of heart and may be NSFW depending on where you work. There is a a lot of blurred “field triage” on a serious butt wound at the @1:40 mark. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Even though the name WhateverSkateboards.com suggests Skateboards are our main-jams, and even though yes, our street style skateboards (shortboards) are top quality, it’s our Custom Longboards that are really where the decks are even more unique.
Choosing a Longboard to Customize
Our Longboard selection is awesome, we’ve got TOP quality boards with perfect concave decks that grip your feet, 9-ply hard Canadian maple with bi-axial fiberglass layers that keep the boards super strong and responsive and always snapping right back into perfect shape without warping. The construction of these boards is the best there is and with 14 years of experience our manufacturing team is second to none. Our selection runs the gamut, whether it be a cruiser for casual riding, downhill decks for shredding the gnar gnar, slide boards for rippin steez like butter, or combinations of different styles, we’ve got decks for you that you’ll love. Don’t over-think it, because once you’ve designed a deck, it’s easy to save it and on the next page you can load it onto ANY of our other boards with a single click!
